Impaired Driving Program
This program aims to reduce the harmful consequences of drinking and driving through a 10 session structured format.
The program encourages participants to seek further rehabilitation if there is an identified need.
Program Principles/Goals
- By reducing substance use, recidivism should be reduced
- Relapse prevention and harm reduction are underlying organizational principles
- By addressing thinking errors, anti-social thinking should have positive changes
- A cognitive- behavioural approach to change attitudes, beliefs and behaviour is used
- Use of motivational style and strategies is extremely important in changing behaviour
Program Components
- Identifying triggering situations and cause of abuse when faced with temptations
- Identifying skills related to managing substance abuse- self-regulation
- Critical thinking and reasoning skills- self management skills (behaviour management such as inhibiting impulsivity)
- Information about and impact of impaired driving- information and education lead to more appropriate problem solving choices
- Criminogenic factors
- Stage appropriate intervention and use of motivational strategies- offering an assessment and evaluation component
