Extrajudicial Sanctions and Conferencing
St. Leonard's Community Services London Region (SLCS) has been the sole provider in London for the Extrajudicial Sanctions Program (EJS) since 1987.
This program offers successful and effective alternatives to the judicial system for youth.
Extrajudicial Sanctions Process
- A youth charged with an offence can apply to the EJS program.
- After screening, the file is then transferred to SLCS.
- A preliminary interview involving the accused, the accused parents, the victim and any other party involved, is set to enact the appropriate consequences. (Often a restorative dialogue between both the victim and accused is essential to many resolutions.)
Goals of the Extrajudicial Sanctions Program
- To provide an opportunity for youth to accept responsibility for their actions and to play a more active role in the resolution of their offence(s)
- Consider the rights and needs of the victim(s) by providing an opportunity to address their concerns and views
- To develop a range of resolution options
- To provide the youth with an opportunity to repay the community by participating in community service
- Reduce recidivism
- Promoting crime prevention
The Extrajudicial Sanctions Consequences May Include:
- Attendance at a Community Justice Circle [link to Restorative Justice>Community Justice Circles] (Conference) where the victim(s) will also be in attendance
- Personal apology to the victim
- Restitution to the victim
- Attendance and participation in one of the following Victimization Classes
- Essays/Projects
- Volunteer Opportunities/Personal Service
- Charitable Donation
